I spend a few hours every week scouring the internet for anyone who’s doing something different and interesting musically, and writing great songs. When I worked at a company with deep pockets, that consisted of finding things that were already popping. The artists probably already had mastered recordings, a manager, an agent, cool blog write-ups, and braggable momentum. Since starting Bear vs Machine, I’ve realized that I needed to rethink what scouting looks like for a new company. We gotta be earlier. We need to look under rocks, and most importantly, where no one else is looking.

I wanted to start highlighting some of the special things I come across that I’m not working with, but am a big fan of.

Every once in awhile I’ll stumble on an artist or a voice that gives me chills. When I heard the intro of “Nowhere” I stopped all the extra stuff I do when browsing for artists online and just listened. Everything from the anticipatory chord progression and the soft but warm vocal tone hooked me immediately. Pinkpirate hails from the South Coast of England and seems to be writing and recording everything herself. With a song this strong out the gate, I have no doubt we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from her. And I think pinkpirate will have way more than 78 followers on Soundcloud very soon.
